While the mobile-friendly change is important, we still use a variety of signals to rank search results. The intent of the search query is still a very strong signal -- so even if a page with high quality content is not mobile-friendly, it could still rank high if it has great content for the query. - Rolling out the mobile-friendly update ![]() Original Post on 4/10/2015 updated on 4/24/2015 Mobile-geddon has come and gone and we are STILL seeing mobile sties being sorted by Google searches?!? Why is this? Google said that on 21th of April they will initiate a new mobile algorithm that will penalize the internet ranking of sites that are not mobile friendly. That sure does sound like mobilegedon if you can imagine websites that are not mobile friendly suddenly not being sorted at all...or so we thought... BUT it seems like that is not the case exactly. I think the focus should not be on the word penalize but rather on mobile friendly boost! That means that if you have a mobile site you will get a new-found boost in rankings and if you do not have one you will not get a boost resulting in being penalized. The content is still being sorted based on relevancy factors (power of many, keywords, backlinks, content) So I think we are mostly relieved to finally have confirmation (sort-off) that non-mobile sites are NOT FALLING OFF THE FACE OF THE INTERNET! They are indeed only being pushed down....and down... and down... in online searches while the rest of us with mobile site are enjoying some fresh air at the top! If you would like to join this new hip crowd with mobile functionality we need to have the mobile conversation... Personally I have had to do extensive research on which is the best way to go. I am not a developer but as a "Google watcher" I spend a significant amount of time analyzing searches and SEO. So for a chance to 'boost your SEO' by being mobile friendly here are your options:
So what is the difference between these? First one is a App. Problem with an application is that you first have to download it to view the site. So for those who do not want to download it, they wont be able to access the mobile content and only the non-fuctional difficult to navigate desktop content. So for big sites who has consumers use them often such as local chambers this might be a good option. For small businesses, not so much... Second one is a Mobile Site and the Third choice is a Responsive site. So lets compare them:
So it is pretty obvious that if your website is not mobile friendly then you need to make some changes. This is the main reason why I try to get my clients to build sites on newer website platforms such as Weebly as it has a built-in mobile site part of the responsive platform. But what about bigger structures such as Franchise companies using a PHP database for their franchise owner mini-websites? I would personally suggest fixing what you have and upgrading to a responsive platform. Makes sense for the future.... Not sure how well you website is working ...or NOT WORKING? We have many online tools to help you see exactly in what kind of shape your website is. Marketing Grader from Hubspot has a test to see how well it is functioning. Google Developers has a Mobile Friendly Scan as well as a user friendly / loading speed scan for a more in-dept overview.
